Lula said that there are those who rebel saying that there are tax increases, but he denied that the government is increasing the tax burden.
“It’s not a tax increase. If you are honest with your conscience, you will realize that the tax burden of this government today, in percentage terms, is lower than it was in 2011,” he said. And added: “What we are doing is not trying to increase taxes, we are trying to make taxation fairer and more correct.”
In his speech, Lula criticized what he called the “lobbying industry.” “We wanted to tax these ‘Bets’, fintechs, I don’t know, this thing that don’t allow you watch on TV anymore, because there is so much betting advertising that you don’t even know where to bet anymore,” he complained.
Lula also criticized the payroll tax exemption for 17 economic sectors. “In exchange for what?” And he praised his Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad: “Few countries in the world have a Finance Minister with the seriousness that Haddad has. This country has had very few.”
In the same speech, Lula said that there is a “rebellion” among the richest because of the compensation in the bill (PL) for the exemption of Income Tax (IR) for those who earn up to R$5,000 (US$920) per month.
