Public Prosecutor targets player suspected of match-fixing in Ceará state championship

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Ceará launched “Operation Minefield” this Wednesday (30), executing a search and seizure warrant against a football player suspected of manipulating the result of a 2024 Série C match in the Ceará State Championship. The action follows a complaint filed in May by the Ceará Football Federation (FCF), based on reports provided by Sportradar.

A mobile phone was seized during the operation, which was authorized by the 7th Regional Custody and Guarantees Center. The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Unit (Nuinc), with support from the Civil Police.

The investigation began after the Ceará Football Federation reported the case. The Federation received technical reports from Sportradar, a company specializing in sports integrity monitoring, which indicated highly suspicious betting patterns.

Bettors allegedly focused specifically on predictions that the player’s team would lose during the first half of the match.

According to the documents, the player under investigation deliberately passed the ball to the opposing team in a clearly intentional play to alter the score while the game was still tied 0–0. The severity of the incident was highlighted by the match referee in the Game Report (RDJ), and it caused outrage among the suspect’s teammates, who even considered walking off the field in protest.

Last May 9, another operation led by Nuinc was launched targeting match-fixing, also based on an FCF complaint supported by Sportradar reports. That earlier operation indicated potential manipulation in matches from the 2024 Série B and Série C of the Ceará State Championship. Nuinc continues to investigate in order to identify and hold other possible individuals accountable for the criminal activity.
