Who bets more: men or women? Young people or the elderly? Which social class? These are some of the questions answered in the study conducted by InPlaySoft.
“Brazil has already become one of the largest and most dynamic iGaming markets in the world due to its passionate fans, a growing digital infrastructure, and a developing regulatory framework. The opportunity here is not just significant, it is transformative,” said Alex Rose, CEO of InPlaySoft.
How much do Brazilians spend on betting?
The InPlaySoft study highlights relevant data on bettor behavior. After the first six months of regulation in Brazil, it became clear that small deposits dominate the market, the report notes.
“A study by Pay4Fun showed that 94% of deposits in sports betting during the first two months after regulation were below R$ 100 (US$18). Only 1.4% exceeded R$ 1,000 (US$180), and just 0.3% were above R$ 2,500 (US$450). This indicates that the vast majority of bettors place small wagers, most likely as a form of entertainment rather than high-risk gambling,” InPlaySoft analyzes.
As for the average monthly spend by Brazilians on betting, the study cites research from the Brazilian Investor X-Ray, conducted by Anbima and Datafolha, which revealed an average of R$ 216 (US$39) per month. The same study showed that 15% of Brazilians — more than 23 million people — placed at least one sports bet in 2025.
Estimated monthly average
The InPlaySoft study also points to betting volumes in Brazil during the first half of 2025:
- January: R$ 20 billion (US$3.6 billion)
- February: R$ 25 billion (US$4.5 billion)
- March to June: R$ 28 to R$ 30 billion per month (US$5 to US$5.4 billion)
- Total for the semester: R$ 157 to 165 billion (US$29 to US$30.5 billion)
It is important to note that these numbers represent gross turnover — the total amount wagered — not net profit or winnings. In May, with a 12% tax on GGR, the government collected R$ 814 million (US$146 million) in taxes, which indicates an estimated GGR of R$ 6.78 billion (US$1.22 billion) for that month alone.
This volume surpassed projections made before regulation. In August 2024, Itaú estimated that the online betting market would move between R$ 8 billion (US$1.44 billion) and R$ 20 billion (US$3.6 billion) per year. Now, Brazil is on track to become one of the largest iGaming markets in the world by volume.
Why do Brazilians bet?
“But why do Brazilians bet? What are their motivations?” asks InPlaySoft, citing a KTO survey on the subject:
- 48% play when they have extra money available.
- 40% seek the thrill and adrenaline of iGaming.
- 31% are attracted by the quality of online games — an important data point for developers and operators investing in interface, design, and user experience.
- 25% follow recommendations from friends or acquaintances.
- 24% now trust the legislation and new regulations.
- 20% started betting after seeing or hearing ads.
Regarding gender, reports from the Women in Gaming Association (AMIG) indicate that women now represent 51% of online bettors, marking the first time female participation has surpassed male.
ENV Media confirms this proportion, showing that 54% of women who gamble with real money engage in sports betting, and 49.8% play in online casinos.
The AMIG study also revealed that female bettors tend to be more cautious: 37% of them limit spending to R$ 200 (US$36) per week, and many actively use tools to control expenses.
Sports betting remains more male-dominated: 53% of bettors in this segment are men and 47% are women, according to Agência Brasil — although the gap is narrowing.
In addition, the InPlaySoft report provides insights from its partner betting operators on the most popular types of bets, both in sports and online casino games, as well as the devices most frequently used: mobile or desktop.
“We observe that desktop users are generally more analytical, often making decisions based on deeper analysis. This results in higher profits and, consequently, larger bets,” says Joel Silva, Head of Sports Betting at InPlaySoft.
“On the other hand, mobile users tend to be more impulsive, usually not engaging in detailed analysis of teams — likely due to the less user-friendly nature of mobile devices for this kind of research.”
The international software provider concludes the report with forecasts and useful insights that iGaming operators can apply to stay ahead of the competition in Brazil.
“As we have seen throughout this report, the first six months of legalized iGaming in Brazil exceeded nearly all expectations in terms of market activity, user engagement, and government revenue generation. With more than R$ 160 billion (US$28.74 billion) wagered by June, a consistent monthly betting volume between R$ 25 and 30 billion (US$ 4.5 to 5.4billion), over 5 billion visits to the platform in just the first three months, and a robust licensing pipeline in development, Brazil has quickly become one of the world’s most dynamic iGaming markets,” analyzes InPlaySoft.
Forecasts for the future
Here are some projections for the next six months of Brazil’s regulated betting market, according to InPlaySoft:
1. Betting volume will stabilize around R$ 30 billion (US$5.4 billion) per month.
2. Tax revenue will exceed R$ 20 billion (US$3.7bn) by the end of 2025.
3. The user base will become more sophisticated and diverse.
4. Regulation will become even stricter.
5. International investment will intensify.
6. Social and ethical discussions will grow.
