GMB – How did your career in the betting sector begin?
Carol Luna – I am a lawyer and have been working with compliance since 2019, always focusing on integrity, corporate ethics, and anti-money laundering.
Over the last four years, I directed my career toward the iGaming sector, where I had the opportunity to lead the structuring and consolidation of compliance departments in nationally relevant operators such as NSX, now Flutter Brazil, which includes well-known brands like Betnacional.
This experience allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge of the regulatory challenges and opportunities in the Brazilian market, as well as to develop a very practical vision of how to implement integrity policies that are both efficient and aligned with the reality of the sector.
What integrity measures does the company adopt?
Esportes Gaming Brasil already has a well-established culture of integrity, and our commitment is to continuously improve the tools and processes that sustain this culture. One of the resources we use is Sportradar’s MTS system, which is an international benchmark in sports integrity monitoring.
This technology enables us to identify suspicious movements in real time, significantly enhancing our ability to respond to atypical behavior in the market. In addition, we apply strict due diligence protocols, internal policies for the prevention of financial crimes, and a continuous training and awareness program for all employees, ensuring that integrity is a cross-cutting value throughout the group.
You recently became head of compliance. What is your main goal at this stage?
My main goal is to reinforce and evolve the compliance culture already in place within the group, structuring increasingly robust processes focused on governance, integrity, and risk mitigation. I want to ensure that Esportes Gaming Brasil continues to be a benchmark in transparency and responsibility, both in its relationship with regulators and with our users and partners.
This involves everything from adapting to ever-evolving regulatory standards to implementing more sophisticated internal controls, always with the aim of reducing operational friction and contributing to market confidence and long-term business sustainability.
How does Esportes Gaming Brasil promote responsible gaming?
Responsible gaming is one of the pillars of our compliance program. We offer technological tools for voluntary self-exclusion, deposit and time limits, as well as active behavioral monitoring that allows us to identify risk patterns and act preventively.
We also provide a support network that directs players to help services when needed, and we invest in ongoing educational campaigns to raise awareness about healthy platform use.
At the same time, we have strategic partnerships with institutions specializing in gambling addiction, such as EBAC and IAA, reinforcing our commitment to prevention and user protection. The goal is to create a safe ecosystem in which entertainment does not compromise the financial or emotional health of the bettor.
What is the significance of the Sports Tech Summit: Integrity, Innovation, Intelligence for the sector?
The Sports Tech Summit is a high-level event that brings together business leaders, technical experts, and public authorities to discuss strategic topics for the sector’s future. The presence of representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Sports, and other regulatory bodies underscores the seriousness of the debate and the urgency of a modern and effective regulatory framework.
For the sector, events like this are essential to building institutional reputation, exchanging experiences with other global players, and demonstrating that Brazil is ready to operate with integrity, innovation, and regulatory intelligence. For us, participating is a way to reaffirm Esportes Gaming Brasil’s commitment to a sustainable and responsible development agenda.
You will participate in the panel “Regulatory Impacts on Sports Betting in Brazil.” What will your contribution be to the debate?
I intend to contribute with a practical perspective on how the sector can prepare for regulation that combines integrity, competitiveness, and consumer protection.
I will highlight what we are already implementing at Esportes Gaming Brasil to align with the best international standards: from sports integrity systems and anti-money laundering programs to responsible gaming initiatives and corporate governance. I want to show that it is indeed possible to build a regulatory environment that fosters innovation while remaining rigorous in defending ethical principles and safeguarding the market as a whole.
What will be the central debate of this panel?
The panel will address the progress of Brazil’s regulatory framework, focusing on the impacts it will have on operational integrity, operator compliance, and the sector’s sustainable growth.
A very important point will be the fight against the illegal market, which today represents a significant risk to both users and the industry’s reputation as a whole. We will also discuss how to ensure that new regulations effectively promote a healthy competitive environment with clear rules and effective oversight mechanisms.
How is the current relationship with the SPA?
The relationship with the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) has evolved very positively. We have seen more mature dialogue between operators and the regulatory body, with clearer processes and greater openness for the exchange of technical information.
A reflection of this is the recent approval we received to include a third brand in our operations, which demonstrates the SPA’s trust and recognition of our compliance commitment. We remain committed to building a solid, collaborative, and transparent relationship, always with the goal of contributing to the institutional strengthening of the regulated market.
