Sports law seminar to discuss betting and integrity in São Paulo

The city of São Paulo will host the fourth edition of the Sports Law Practice Seminar next September 20th, promoted by Verbo Jurídico in partnership with Lei em Campo. The meeting will take place at 453 Paulista Avenue, starting at 8:30 am, bringing together legal experts, lawyers, and sports experts to discuss current issues in the field, including sports betting and match-fixing.

The program includes panels on trending topics in sports. Highlights include sports betting, integrity, multi-club ownership (conglomerates), and human rights in sports.

The seminar will feature lectures, panels, and discussion rounds with lawyers and specialists. Confirmed speakers include:

- Victor Targino, lawyer at Sporty Group;

- Ana Mizutori, lawyer specializing in sports law;

- Andrei Kampff, sports lawyer and journalist;

- Luiz Felipe Santoro, lawyer and current president of the OAB/SP Committee on Gaming, Betting, and Responsible Gaming Law;

- Guilherme Massola, lawyer and auditor at the Sports Justice of Futsal and Paulista Football;

- Mariana Chamelette, lawyer and vice president of the TJD-SP;

- Filipe Souza, sports lawyer; and

- Mariana Cechini, lawyer and legal manager responsible for compliance at CBRu.

According to Victor Targino, the seminar is an “excellent opportunity for students and sports professionals to gain exposure to the practical experiences of jurists in the field.

“The event will be an excellent opportunity to debate some of the most relevant and current issues in Sports Law. It will be a privilege to share the stage with high-level speakers, profound experts in our science, which increasingly demands breadth of knowledge to address the growing complexity,” said sports lawyer Filipe Souza.

Lawyer Ana Mizutori emphasized the academic and upskilling dimension of the event: “The seminar has established itself as a space for academic and practical updates, connecting postgraduate studies in Sports Law to contemporary debates. This edition reaffirms its relevance by addressing topics such as integrity, ethics, and recent legislation, featuring high-level speakers who bring real cases and concrete experiences. Beyond the technical content, the event also strengthens connections, networking, and collaboration among professionals in the sector, amplifying its educational value.”

Among the key topics, Law 14,790/2023 (the Bets Law) emerges as a regulatory framework for betting, imposing integrity rules and accountability on athletes, managers, and operators, in line with the CBJD, the General Sports Law, and international standards such as the FIFA Code of Ethics."

"Meanwhile, the phenomenon of multi-club ownership and international conglomerates, under the SAF Law (Law 14,193/2021), presents new governance challenges and risks to competitive integrity, requiring legal safeguards that reconcile investment attraction with the preservation of equality and sports credibility,
” added the lawyer.

Finally, Ana Mizutori stressed that the seminar “not only promotes critical debate on the major legal dilemmas in sports today but also contributes to training professionals prepared to excel in a constantly evolving environment.”
