"Genius Sports is working to have its semi-automatic offside technology in the Brasileirão"

Genius Sports presented its semi-automatic offside technology in São Paulo, already available in the NFL and Liga MX. Guilherme Buso, VP LatAm, spoke exclusively to GMB about the solution and added that 'the company is already working to have it ready for the Brasileirão.' The tool allows tracking of everything on the pitch, including player performance, contributing to teams' technical decisions and benefiting sports betting users.

GMB – What does it mean to address the entire sports and betting community about integrity?
Guilherme Buso – Since the beginning of the sports betting regulation process, Genius Sports understood that it was the right time not only to focus on the commercial side of our supply scope, but also to proactively contribute to sports integrity here in Brazil. That is why we are now in the fourth edition of the Genius Sports event with GovRisk.

But this time we expanded the scope of our presence, also discussing new technologies and intelligence. In fact, the event changed its name in 2025 to Brasil Sports Tech Summit, where we presented our innovative Semiautomatic Offside Technology (SAOT).

How does it work, and what are Genius Sports’ expectations for this product in the global market?
It’s about using technology to eliminate doubt. We know that in Brazil and anywhere in the world, offside is often defined by millimeters, and it is very difficult for a referee on the pitch to make such a call. Sometimes even the VAR cameras cannot measure it precisely.

Genius has this technology. These are cameras we call GeniusIQ, installed in stadiums, that can track everything happening on the field, from players’ movements to skeletal mapping. With this level of accuracy, we can identify in real time whether there is an offside or not, or whether the ball has crossed the goal line or not.

This technology has already been officially applied in the Premier League, which uses the solution, and now we are bringing SAOT to Liga MX in Mexico. It’s an innovative technology, and highly relevant in eliminating doubts. We are very pleased to present this solution here in Brazil as well.

It requires a major hardware investment. How do you manage so many cameras in so many football stadiums?
It may sound massive, but it isn’t. We use iPhones, which we distribute around the stadiums, interconnected via the internet, to capture an infinite amount of data and transform it not only into information, but also into a virtualization of the match, enabling the identification of offsides through the semiautomatic offside solution.

This technology also enables better on-field performance analysis. It can measure how much distance a player covers, the ball’s speed, the shot’s velocity. With that, teams’ tactics can be mapped. These hardware setups deliver a lot to the sports ecosystem as a whole. This technology is already being used in the NFL, Premier League, and also in basketball.

How is it set up? Are the devices fixed?
They need to be fixed, because each installation involves calibration to ensure accuracy. If cameras were set up only for a single match, some precision would be lost. Ideally, they should be installed permanently in stadiums.

Is this system integrated with other Genius Sports tools, such as BetVision?
Absolutely. From the moment we have these cameras, we can feed data into our technology that serves betting operators. In the NFL, for example, BetVision adds an extra layer of engagement through augmented reality. You can see players’ names appear in the broadcast and use filters that even allow you to click on a player’s name and place a bet, since the system provides markets and statistics.

Does it also allow for micro-betting?
Yes. The user can bet, for instance, on who will score the next touchdown. Having a greater range of data brings innovation not only to sports, but also to iGaming, where Genius operates. We are experts in real-time data, which benefits both sports and betting operators.

When will this system be available in Brazil?
We are working on it. It depends on direct relations with federations and clubs, but the reception has been incredible. Now we need to finalize agreements and implement the project. It takes time and is not simple, as there are many demands. But I have no doubt it is an amazing technology already available in Latin America through Liga MX, and for betting operators naturally plugged into our feed and using this system in competitions worldwide.

Can we expect this solution for the 2026 Brasileirão?
That would be a dream, and it would be fantastic to be responsible for this technology in the Brasileirão. But it also depends on collective effort within the Brazilian sports ecosystem to deliver it in a more complete way for bettors.
