The legislation was created in response to growing concern about the negative effects that sports betting can have on citizens’ mental health and personal finances. The document was signed by the municipal executive on September 22, 2025, taking effect immediately after its publication.
The new law’s main goal is to raise awareness among residents of Natal about the dangers of sports betting and to provide alternatives for those already facing financial and psychological difficulties due to addiction. One of the actions outlined in the law foresees a series of information campaigns, courses, and lectures in schools and other public spaces to educate the population, especially young people, about the risks involved.
“The goal is to provide a safer and more informed environment where people can understand the harm of addiction and protect themselves,” explained councilman Kleber Fernandes (Republicanos), author of the bill approved by the Natal City Council.
The measure also stipulates that all sports betting advertising broadcast in the city, whether in electronic or print media, must be accompanied by the warning message: “Sports betting can cause addiction; always act responsibly,” reinforcing the importance of responsible engagement with betting.
“This is an important step for the city of Natal, where we are addressing a sensitive issue with the seriousness it deserves. Prevention is the best way to avoid irreparable harm, and education is the key to this,” the councilman stated.
Law No. 7,950 aims to protect the population, promote education on the topic, and provide support to those already struggling. The city is now preparing to implement the planned actions, with awareness campaigns and psychological support set to begin immediately.
“From today, Natal becomes an example of responsibility and care for its citizens by confronting the risks of sports betting addiction. With this legislation, the city takes an important step toward creating a safer and healthier future for all,” concluded the councilman.
